Leadership in Education – UNESCO 2024

According to the 2024 UNESCO Global Education Monitoring Report, women remain under-represented in higher education leadership – both globally and locally.

“Although there are more women higher education students than men, women are under-represented in senior leadership positions… with many remaining in middle leadership roles and rarely appointed as vice-chancellors.”

  • Across OECD countries, women make up 45% of academic staff – but only 25% of leaders in the world’s top 200 universities are women.
  • In Australia, just 37% of academic leaders were women as of 2021.

The barriers are complex: family responsibilities, a lack of role models and mentoring, and persistent stereotypes still limit women’s progression into top-tier roles.

Initiatives like WATTLE Leadership Program (Women ATTaining LEadership) are working to change this by building leadership capability, community, and visibility for women across the higher education sector.
